In a significant step forward for girl-centered advocacy, the Enugu State Chapter of the National Coalition of Civil Society to End Child Marriage in Nigeria paid an impactful advocacy visit to the Enugu State Ministry of Budget & Planning on Friday.
The meeting was hosted by the Ministry on behalf of the Honourable Commissioner for Budget and Planning, Barr. Chris Robert Ozongwu, and was represented by the Permanent Secretary, Mrs. Clara Nwakego Eze.

A Promising Commitment
During the engagement, Mrs. Eze commended the Coalition for its work and reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to supporting efforts that advance the rights and protection of girls in Enugu State. Most notably, she assured the delegation that the Ministry will treat with urgency any budget warrant or financial request that addresses issues concerning girls.
This statement is a major milestone for the Coalition’s advocacy work in the state. It sends a powerful message that government stakeholders are listening—and more importantly, responding—to the call for proactive budgeting and planning that protects girls from harmful practices like child marriage.

Why Budget Advocacy Matters
At the heart of the fight to end child marriage is the need for adequate funding for programs that empower girls—especially in areas like education, health, protection, and economic support. Without proper budgetary allocations and timely disbursement of resources, policies remain on paper and girls remain vulnerable.
That’s why this visit was more than symbolic. It was strategic. It was about ensuring that Enugu State’s budget is not only gender-sensitive but girl-responsive.
The Road Ahead
The National Coalition of Civil Society to End Child Marriage in Nigeria remains committed to holding meaningful dialogues with government actors, pushing for accountability, and making sure the voices of girls are reflected in planning, policy, and funding.
We are hopeful that this renewed commitment from the Ministry of Budget & Planning will translate into real, timely action that positively impacts the lives of girls in Enugu State.
Together, we can build a future where no girl is forced into marriage, and every girl is free to dream, learn, and thrive.
