As the world commemorates the 2024 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence under the theme “UNITE! Invest to Prevent Violence Against Women and Girls,” the National Coalition of Civil Society to End Child Marriage in Nigeria stands in solidarity with global efforts to address and eradicate violence against women and girls.
Child marriage remains a critical challenge in Nigeria, with 43% of girls married before age 18 and 17% married before age 15 (UNICEF). Despite significant legislative and advocacy strides, millions of girls are still denied their rights, subjected to harmful practices, and trapped in cycles of poverty and violence.
The Coalition’s Commitment
The National Coalition is resolute in its vision to eliminate child marriage in Nigeria by 2030. Through collaborative action, partnerships with stakeholders, and robust advocacy efforts, the Coalition aims to foster a society where every girl can thrive without fear or limitation.
Our Core Objectives
The Coalition is focused on achieving the following:
- Building Unity: Establishing a strong platform for civil society organizations across Nigeria to coordinate efforts and drive impactful change.
- Fostering Partnerships: Collaborating with key stakeholders, including government agencies, NGOs, and international organizations, to eliminate child marriage and complement state-driven initiatives.
- Advocacy: Leading effective campaigns at the local, national, and international levels to address the root causes of child marriage and promote gender equality.
Urgent Call to Action
As we observe the 16 Days of Activism, the Coalition calls on all stakeholders to take decisive action:
- Government at all levels must improve funding for education, health and social protection
- Community Leaders: Challenge harmful norms and practices that perpetuate child marriage and gender-based violence.
- Civil Society: Strengthen collective action and amplify advocacy for girls’ education and empowerment.
- The Public: Join the conversation, speak out against child marriage, and support survivors.
Investing in Prevention
The fight to end child marriage is not just a legal or cultural issue—it is an investment in Nigeria’s future. By protecting girls, we secure economic growth, improve public health outcomes, and create a more equitable society.
